As you may know, music
is a significant influence on culture. Aside from influencing occasions such
as weddings, funerals, and dances, music also influences the general mood
and customs of a culture. For instance, at wedding receptions it is
practically tradition to include the songs “Chicken Dance” and
“Y.M.C.A.”. Recently, at least in Linden, the song and dance “Crank
That” has become a hit. Not only does music influence culture, it also
reflects culture. Looking at past chart toppers, one can get a historical
view on the time period from which the song became popular. |
| If you notice,
the “Chicken Dance” and “Y.M.C.A.” are fairly appropriate songs for all
ages. Yet, when referring to “Crank That”, let’s just say I am not even
going to post the lyrics. Not to hate on my own generation, but it is very
obvious that words, phrases, and certain expressions that were taboo fifty
years ago have become popular in current language and music. Music is not
entirely responsible for the integration of offensive content, but it has
contributed.

Thus, my goal
of this project is to observe and evaluate the influence that
musicians from the EMI group, like the Beatles, have on the cultures of
the United States and Europe. |
|
So, What Did I learn?
From this trip, I learned that
musicians founded by EMI, in Europe, have and always will have an impact on
the culture of the United States. A perfect example would be the Beatles.
They were basically the leaders of the whole "flower power" sixties culture
that arose. Similarly, the musicians that are founded in the United States
currently influence Europe's culture. However, a popular artist in the U.S.
may not become popular in Europe until a month later. Recently, the U.S. has
become more focused on its own musicians such as Alicia Keys and Justin
Timberlake. However, you can still hear legendary European groups on
designated radio stations. In Europe, almost every store I walked into
played popular American music. Some of it was original, while others were
translated into French or Spanish. Either way, this illustrates that,
currently, American music has more influence over the culture of Europe.
Is this
influence negative? Most of the locals I questioned said, "no." Of course,
there are both positive and negative effects, but the general consensus is
that American music has introduced new traditions and 'kept the public
alive." So, basically, if I would have conducted this project around the
sixties, I would have found evidence that supports my prediction that
European music has influence over the American culture. However, currently,
Europeans preserve their traditions while undergoing influence from American
Music. |
