What we learned about a place that we didn’t know before:

Monday: 8 million people live in Lima, but it was built to hold 4 million; #1 export for money is through minerals

Tuesday: Cusco is shaped like a puma, symbolic of the middle level of religion for the Incas

Wednesday: Incan(s) and their captives carried the stones used to create Ollantaytambo over 17 km

Thursday: The name of the ruins at Machu Picchu is still unknown

Friday: Machu Picchu means “Old Mountain” and Huayna Picchu means “Young Mountain”

Saturday: Sasayhuaman was an entryway for visitors to Cusco.  Pilgrims would gather there before entering, and only a few were allowed to enter. Olympic type games were played by the Incans in the middle green, and winners were granted adulthood.

Some exchange with a native of the country:

Monday: Talked with Celso, his mother, the interpreter, and Compassion member

Tuesday: bought a jersey at a local market

Wednesday: interviewed tour guide

Thursday: declined offers to buy things from people on the streets; sat in a restaurant, ordered an Inca Kola, and watched soccer

Friday: exchanged money (dollars to soles), ordered lunch

Saturday: ordered lunch at a café where the menus were written in only Spanish

Something we learned about the people of that country:

Monday: Most people in Peru, Lima especially, live in poverty.

Tuesday: General information about the Incas (beliefs, customs, etc)

Wednesday: The people of Peru are very passionate about their soccer teams

Thursday: Machu Picchu was built for that particular region of the Incan Empire, like their mayors

Friday: The people of Peru proud of their Incan heritage

Saturday: A lot of people, most in the mountains, still live without basic necessities… piped water and electricity

Something we learned about ourselves each day:

Monday: I can barter for lower prices at the markets

Tuesday: I am willing to try local foods; met G. Washington, M. Anthony, J. Depp, T. Cruise Jr.- all who were teens outside our hotels in Cusco, trying to get us to buy “their” paintings.

Wednesday: I can still play soccer well, even though I haven’t played in a year.

Thursday: I appreciate the skill it took to build these historical Incan sites; watched pick-up soccer game, and sat in a local/non-tourist restaurant watching a game of soccer

Friday: I am not as afraid of heights as I thought (after hiking around Machu and Huayna Picchu)

Saturday: I am not as uncomfortable with horses as I once was (after the horseback tour)
