From
Delta to Domination!
Congratulations to 3 time Delta member Coach
Clint "The Machine" Lawhorne, who was named 2008
MHSAA State Coach of the Year!!
The Linden
Eagles Cross Country Team, led by 3 time D
Club member, Clint "The
Machine" Lawhorne and 2 time D
Club member and 3 time All-State runner
Brad "Rad Ferrari" Ferrara, Dominated the
MHSAA
State Cross Country meet, winning by 115 points over 2nd place! This was the
1st state title for any sport in the MHSAA in the history of Linden, and it
set a state record for margin of victory over the 2nd place team.
The Linden boys also placed 2nd in the Dream Race, which takes the
times of every runner in divisions 1-4, all 978 of them, and all 110 teams,
and ranks them as if they were all in the same race. Of 978 runners, Linden
placed 4 in the top 100, and 5th was at 146! They were also the ONLY
division 2 team in the top ten!

"It all began with
Delta," yelled Coach Lawhorne as the team walked away with the trophy. Let's
explain, the first official run of the season, the first day of cross
country camp, was to Delta, which made the entire state-title holding team
all Delta Club members, and made Lawhorne a 3 timer, and
Ferrara a 2 time
member. The last official run of the season saw the
D
Eagles take 3rd, 5th, 12th, 25th, 41st, 73rd, and 136th en route to
literally and figuratively running away with the championship.
This also moved all of the runners into higher spots on the
all time Linden list, Jake Hord into #1, breaking the 35 year old school
record, and Brad Ferrara into 3rd, .5 away from also breaking the record. |

Not to be outdone, the Linden JV
team, many of which would have been Varsity on most other teams in the state
of MI, had a great time running what Jake Hoyes called "The funnest race
ever." The open race, in which 3 time D
members below Lawhorne and Schartow both ran, was won
(sort of) by Josh LaBrenz, who ran approximately 1 mile of the 3.1 mile course,
barely edging out D
member Adam Dietz, who actually ran the full course.
Another notable from what we'll call "The Delta Open" was
D member Delaney Andrews,
who ran a lifetime PR of 27:57 in her final high school race ever. |

Mr.
Lawhorne
It was his idea to run to "Delta" in the first place.
Clint "The Machine" Lawhorne has won numerous awards
for running around the country.

Lawhorne gets really into the
Delta spirit. See his sub plans here! |

señor Schartow
The guy almost died getting there, but his legendary
motivational speech to...well...himself...kept him "pumped up" to go the 10
more yards he needed. Hey, how was he supposed to know it was just around
the corner??
Running accomplishments??
Well, he ran a race with a broken toe and stitches in his foot, in a sandal
that was duct taped to his foot once...does that count? |
