A
Brief History of EMI
It all began with
the formation of the Electric and
Musical Industries Ltd. in 1931. The company was involved the
manufacturing of recording and playback equipment. Surprisingly, the company
actually developed radar equipment and guided missiles during WWII. In 1951,
Columbia records cut its connection with EMI records; however, in 1957 EMI
acquired stock in
Capitol Records,
and entered the American market. The 50s, 60s, and 70s were the decades in
which EMI gained major success. This is in large part due to their roster
that contained The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and Pink Floyd. In 1971, the
Electric and Musical Industries Ltd. changed its name to EMI. Success
for the company continued. In 1992, a branch of EMI bought the popular
Virgin Records. The company continues to flourish today.
