Linden: Weather
was conducive to running. Felt great. Able to push a little more than usual
with the same effort and intensity. Heart rate reflects this. |
|
Nadi: A 16 hour
time change and only 2 hours of sleep led to 20 bpm higher than the run on
March 20. Nadi was also very humid that day. Sand from the beach and heat
may have led to the extreme increase of heart rate over relatively the same
effort level. |

Auckland: Oppen
is a good example here of the risk of airplanes. He felt sick from the food
he ate. His sickness most likely caused his heart rate to be 11 bpm higher
than mine instead of about the same. Auckland is the same time zone as
Fiji, so, other than the Daylight Saving's Time Change that occurred, our
body's were probably adjusting to the different time zone by now. |

Sydney: From day
1 in Sydney, we were on the go being good tourists. After a day full of
exhaustion, Señor and I went for a run to explore Hyde Park and the Opera
House. The exhaustion caused a slower pace and decreased heart rate with the
same perceived effort. Our bodies may have been able to handle more than we
thought after a day of walking around. The next day, the entire group went
for a run on roughly the same route. They were able to run at a slightly
elevated heart rate and effort as opposed to the previous day. Jet lag has
definitely slowed the runs down but not too significantly. |

Honolulu: The two
days spent in Honolulu were filled with as much tourism as possible. While
we did go on the beach and walk around town, we were never able to go for a
run. |
|
Linden: The day
after we came back, Oppen, Bobby, and I ran in a track meet. This was a
good indicator to check how much aerobic base and was lost. I ran 4 events
and my legs were heavy/tired after the first two. Before the trip, I was
able to run 3 events without feeling a significant impact on aerobic
fitness. A conclusion can be drawn that something on the trip caused
decreased fitness levels, most likely a lack of being able to run as much as
before the trip. Two weeks of lessened physical activity does not prepare
the body well for physically demanding activities. |
