Where We Went Each Day

 

April 1: arrived in Fiji, took a bus to our resort, walked down to Mama's Pizza for dinner

 

April 2: stayed at the resort all day, went to Hard Rock Cafe for dinner

 

April 3: arrived in New Zealand, took a bus from Auckland to our hotel in Rotorura, stopped briefly at the Hobbiton

 

April 4: duck tour on the lakes around Rotorura, very small thrill ride park, attended a sheep show, rode up the skyline gondola, visited a jade store, and ate dinner Maori style in our hotel

 

April 5: took a bus from Rotorura to Auckland, visited the Waitomo caves (glow worms) on the way, ran around the city of Auckland for 20 minutes

 

April 6: arrived in Sydney, went to the Sydney tower, walked around Hyde park briefly, ran to the Opera House

 

April 7: bus ride to Bondi Bay, Mrs. MacQuarie's chair, the Opera House, an opal museum, Darling Harbour, took a harbour cruise, and went to a zoo

 

April 8: walked to the food court, bought souvenirs at the mall and attempted to find the Haymarket, ate dinner at Hungry Jack's

 

April 9: went back to the Haymarket, played frisbee in Hyde Park, and walked around a few malls

 

April 10: went to the Featherdale Zoo, arrived in Honolulu, took a bus to Pearl Harbor, visited the beach in Waikiki

 

April 11: took a bus to more secluded beach than the public shore, went to the mall and the apple store, ate dinner at Buffalo Wild Wings

 

Something We Learned About A Place

 

April 1: Fiji is made up of more than 330 islands

 

April 2: the British own the territory of Fiji

 

April 3: New Zealand is divided into two islands: the North Island and the South Island

 

April 4: Auckland is the most populated city in all of New Zealand

 

April 5: Waitomo Caves was discovered in 1887 by two explorers on a raft

 

April 6: Australia is divided into seven states: New South Whales, Victoria, Queensland, Northern Territory, Tasmania, Western Australia, and South Australia

 

April 7: Bondi Beach was the host of all beach volleyball games in the 2000 Olympic Games

 

April 8: the Haymarket is a place in Sydney that sells common tourist souvenirs at very affordable prices

 

April 9: Hyde Park is home to many seagulls and the Australian white ibis, neither of which are the least bit afraid of humans

 

April 10: Japan originally had no plans to attack Pearl Harbor until the United States cut off oil supply because they did not support Japan's war with China

 

April 11: California does not have Buffalo Wild Wings yet Hawaii does

 

An Exchange With A Native

 

April 1: greeted many Fijians with "Bula" which is a very popular word meaning hello, goodbye, and many other polite words

 

April 2: ordered food from a waitress at Hard Rock Cafe (her dialect was hard to understand)

 

April 3: talked a little with our bus driver, Bill

 

April 4: asked the Maori guide a few questions about his village Te Whakarewarewatanga O Te Ope Taua A Wahiao

 

April 5: talked with the Waikiki Cave tour guide about the glow worms

 

April 6: talked to our bus driver for Sydney, Gary

 

April 7: asked the workers at the opal museum about the jewelry

 

April 8: asked the Adidas store workers in Sydney about their merchandise

 

April 9: exchanged money at the currency shop

 

April 10: listened to an old Pearl Harbor veteran talk about the attack

 

April 11: gave the rest of my Buffalo Wild Wings dinner to a homeless lady on the street

 

Something We Learned About the People Here

 

April 1: 50% of the people in Fiji are natives; the rest are divided between Europeans, Indians, and the Chinese

 

April 2: Fijians love the game of rugby and have a very talented national team called Digicel

 

April 3: 50% of the people in New Zealand are of European descent

 

April 4: Rotorura was named by the native Maori along with many other towns and villages that make up a large portion of New Zealand today

 

April 5: AC/DC is originally from Australia

 

April 6: there are about 6.3 million people in the state of New South Whales

 

April 7: James Cook was the first European to discover the large landmass of what is now Australia, but the Aboriginals been present for over 4,000 years

 

April 8: Sydney is very accepting to people of different ethnicity, age, gender, and orientation

 

April 9: the people of Australia play two major forms of rugby; one is the Australian Rugby League which is more common, the other is called Australian Football League which is played by Aussie rules

 

April 10: defined literally, "Aloha" means face-to-face

 

April 11: 1 million people live on the island of Oahu, and about three-fifths of those people live in Honolulu alone

 

Something I Learned About Myself

 

April 1: I love flying, but I hate how long the flights were

 

April 2: two of my new favorite activities are rugby and photography

 

April 3: someday I want to go back to New Zealand and run through the rolling hills

 

April 4: I like going out on lakes but not going in the water

 

April 5: I have gotten rid of my claustrophobia and walking through the caves was fun

 

April 6: Sydney would be a great place for me to live someday; I would never get bored or lonely

 

April 7: conserving money is a talent of mine, yet I need to learn to relax and spend a little more sometimes

 

April 8: I can make new friends quite easily when one-on-one; when talking in groups I become shy

 

April 9: I could live on vegan food if I was motivated enough to research which vegan foods I like

 

April 10: nothing lasts forever, so I need to take chances when I have them and not care what others tell me; I am smart enough to make my own decisions and be responsible

 

April 11: I realized that I became very attached to the people I met from Fresno and am going to miss them after this trip ends
