About Me
Since 1948, Costa Rica has not had a standing military. Costa Rica has had a very brutal past and is not ignorant to the damages a war can do. The history of Costa Rica is a bloody one. One of their greatest assets is that they can come out of that now have no military,  knowing about the hurt that war can cause. Their economy has benefited from the absence of no military greatly. Just think about all the money we would save if we did not have a military. And in no way, shape, or form am I trying to not support our military since I leave for US Marine Corps Basic Training on October 19th.

To keep the peace in Costa Rica itself, the government has a very powerful police force to ensure that laws and justice are served and protected. And with all the money they are saving, they are way ahead of the curb in education. In Costa Rica, there are more teachers than there are police officers. Our government in 2005 spend 5.3% of our national budget and in Costa Rica they have spent nearly 400% percent of their national budget with a little over 20%. As a country that is classified as undeveloped country, to focus nothing on a military and put their spending towards a higher education is pretty unique. Because of their government having more money to budget towards education, their literacy rate is the highest of its neighboring countries. The neighbor to the north, Nicaragua, and has an incredibly low rate at 66.5% at Adults. Before their kids reach the age of ten they are already so much more educated than most of the adults in their surrounding country. But Costa Rica does have a higher literacy rate than almost all of Latin America. The military was taken out of power after the Calderonista Invasion of Costa Rica. This invasion was the last major conflict Costa Rica had before their termination of their military.
