Frequently Asked Questions

To start off with, I have done a lot of research on this project and I have interviewed many people on this in Costa Rica, but this does not ensure that they are correct. They are swayed by personal opinion and personal beliefs.

What benefits are there from having no military especially when it is considered a developing country?

The benefits in the eyes of the people are being able to divert their money to something more productive. Instead of investing their money in the military they open in up to their education. In 1990, 63.8% of the students in the University Costa Rica went to the college without paying any tuition. They can focus on having an educated work-force and country, instead of constantly having to arm themselves and train soldiers.

What are the downfalls of having no military?

According to many of the citizens of Costa Rica, there are no downfalls to not having a military. The country itself has a police force and can deal with the small problems and that is really all they feel they need. It is a very hard thing for me to understand as a citizen who is fed that the country is in danger by the news everyday. But they live by a more peaceful strategy and just live; they do not worry about what not having a military could bring.
