I would first like to start off with some statistics. Costa Rica is still
classified as a developing country. They are way ahead of the curve and do
not fall into the stereotype of most Latin American countries. They are not
a drug trafficking country because only 1.01% of their entire population are
convicted of drug offences. That is extremely low considering that the
United States is at 5.6% of their population. Costa Rica is 85th in the
highest GDP out of 229, considering their neighbors are ranked 140, is
impressive. The United States is the best measuring
stick to put Costa Rica into perspective. The death rate in Costa Rica is
4.31 per 1000 and the death rate in the United States is 8.27 per 1000. This
is taken out of thousand so the huge difference between the number of
populations is irrelevant. And since they have only a police force they save
a lot of money in that area also. Of our entire GDP we spend approximately
4.08% of our money on a military and funding for that. But since Costa Rica
has no major armed forces, they only spend 0.4% of their money on their
police force. They focus a lot of their spending on their future by
investing it in their education. The United States spends 5.4% of our
government expenditure on education and Costa Rica spends 22.4% of their
government expenditure.
