El Café de Costa Rica

Costa Rican coffee!!!!! If you think that you've had a real cup of coffee here in the United States, then you are horribly wrong. The coffee in Costa Rica is by far the most amazing coffee that I've ever tasted. With a rich, strong flavor and a very smooth after-taste, all coffee in Costa Rica seems to be miles ahead of any North American counterpart.

During my visit in Costa Rica, we visited the Volcán Poás, a large volcano outside the city of San José. After trekking around the volcano for the better part of the day, our group stopped at a coffee plantation at the base of the volcano. Perhaps this is what gives the coffee its strong unique flavor. Volcanic soil is among the most fertile on Earth, and the people of Costa Rica have turned this to their advantage by growing coffee there.

Here, I am at a cafe in Costa Rica. I decided that ordering a cup of traditional style coffee would be a good idea. I wasn't disappointed. Instead of a premade cup of coffee like I was expecting, I was given a cup, a pot of boiling hot water, and a strange little contraption that contained the coffee grounds. A lot of coffee grounds. By pouring the hot water through the small pouch with the coffee grounds, I was effectively brewing my own cup of coffee. After the coffee was finished 'brewing', and it was sufficiently cool enough to drink, I sat down to enjoy the treat. I was so overwhelmed by how strong the coffee was that I nearly choked. Don't get me wrong, the coffee was smooth and flavorful, but it was so strong that I couldn't quite handle it. That's when I noticed that the waiter had purposefully served the coffee with two sugars, which I added. The sugar dulled the strength of the coffee, and I enjoyed the best coffee that I'd ever had. Over the next few days, I found myself purchasing some Costa Rican coffee wherever I could find it.

Recently, coffee producers in Costa Rica were sued by Colombian coffee producers for producing t-shirts, bumper stickers, and memorabilia bearing the slogan "Juan Valdez Drinks Costa Rican Coffee".
